Cutaneous injection-related infections (CIRI), such as abscesses and cellulitis, are the cause of a substantial burden of morbidity and mortality among injection drug users (IDU). The possible contribution of exposure to correctional environments to CIRI risk has not been fully investigated. Thus, we sought to test the possible relationship between incarceration and CIRI using data from a community-based sample of IDU.

Data on Arab American health is lacking nationwide. This survey of the Arab American community in southwest Brooklyn assessed perceptions of health status, needs, behaviors, and access to services. Bilingual interviewers administered a structured survey to community members in public gathering places. Of 353 surveyed, 43% were men and 57% women, most spoke Arabic and were Muslim, and most had moved to the U.S. after 1990. One quarter were unemployed.

To examine health providers’ perceived barriers, supports, and vaccination actions in delivering the HPV vaccine to females ages 9–17 in four states. Differences in providers’ HPV vaccination of pre-adolescents compared with older adolescents were explored. A random sample of 1,500 pediatricians, family physicians, gynecologists, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants from four states were asked to complete a mail survey.

Health is increasingly understood as a product of multiple levels of influence, from individual biological and behavioral influences to community and societal level contextual influences. In understanding these contextual influences, community health researchers have increasingly employed both geographic methodologies, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and community participatory approaches.

The public health workforce is diverse and encompasses a wide range of professions. For tribal  communities, the Community Health Representative (CHR) is a public health paraprofessional  whose role as a community health educator and health advocate has expanded to become an integral part of the health delivery system of most tribes. CHRs possess a unique set of skills and cultural awareness that make them an essential first responder on tribal land.
