You Heard it Here First: Readers Mentally Simulate Described Sounds

The present experiments examined whether readers spontaneously simulate implied auditory elements of sentences. Participants read sentences that implicitly conveyed details that could provoke auditory imagery (e.g., The engine clattered as the truck driver warmed up his rig.), and then performed an unrelated sound categorization task during which they classified sounds as real (occurring in the world) or fake (computer generated). In Experiment 1 these two tasks were performed in sequence; in Experiment 2 they were separated into three experimental blocks to rule out the possibility that readers strategically formed auditory imagery as a result of task demands. In both studies, readers were faster to correctly categorize sounds as ‘real’ when the sounds had been implied by a preceding sentence

Writing (and Rewriting) About the Psychology of Women

Sex Roles is celebrating its 35th anniversary by inviting articles from authors of relevant textbooks. I wrote The Psychology of Women because I have a long-standing concern for social justice and because I actually enjoy writing textbooks. The structure of the 7th edition of this textbook is not markedly different from other recent editions. However, our discipline has changed substantially in terms of the volume of research, the growing emphasis on intersectionality, the awareness that gender biases and gender comparisons are often relatively subtle, and the changing nature of the research findings.

Current textbook authors face challenges such as the overwhelming amount of new information, the difficulty of presenting information about social justice, and problems with publishing companies.

It is believed that there is an association between the weather and rheumatic symptoms. We aimed to investigate what kind of association is present and what are the factors which determine the nature of this association. Fifty-six subjects with rheumatic disease (31 RA, 15 SpA, 10 OA) who live in Antalya were followed between December 2005 and July 2006. Patients were asked to fill diaries which contain questions regarding the symptoms of their rheumatic diseases everyday.
