About Library Universitas Sumatera Utara

The first library established at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) was the Faculty of Medicine Library in 1952, followed by the Faculty of Law Library in 1954. At that time, USU was still under the Universitas Sumatera Utara Foundation before being inaugurated as the seventh state university in Indonesia on November 20, 1957.
In 1970, the Central Library was established alongside existing faculty libraries. In 1987, all libraries at USU were merged and relocated to a new 6,090 m² building located in the center of the Padang Bulan campus.
When USU’s status changed to a State-Owned Legal Entity University (PT-BHMN) in 2005, the Library was merged with the Computer Center and named the Library and Information System. Later, when USU transitioned to a Public Service Agency (BLU) and subsequently into an Autonomous State University (PTN-BH) under Government Regulation No. 16 of 2014, the Library was re-established as an independent unit under the name University Library.
Since 2006, the Library has opened several faculty branches. By 2017, there were 13 branch libraries, including faculty libraries and the USU Hospital Library, all integrated into the University Library service system. This integration was made possible through the support of information technology infrastructure that enabled the development of a centralized library system with multiple service points across the campus. The establishment of branch libraries not only aims to bring services closer to users but also to address the limited space capacity of the central library building.

Head of Library USU

Prof. Dr. Syahril Efendi, S.Si., M.I.T. was born in Medan on November 10, 1967. He pursued his undergraduate (Bachelor’s/S-1) and doctoral (Ph.D./S-3) studies in the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), Medan. He subsequently completed his Master’s degree (S-2) in Computer/Information Technology at the Department of Computer/Information Technology, Faculty of Information Science and Technology (FTSM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Bangi, Malaysia.

Prof. Dr. Syahril Efendi, S.Si., M.I.T. is an experienced academic who has dedicated himself to education since 1996. He has been actively involved in teaching in the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA USU, as well as in the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (Fasilkom-TI), USU)

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he has been entrusted with various strategic positions, including:

1. Head of the RaSiO Laboratory, FMIPA USU (1996–2013)
2. Expert Staff to the Vice Dean for Student Affairs, FMIPA USU (2000–2005)
3. Secretary of the Computer Science Study Program, FMIPA USU (2001–2006)
4. Head of the Information Systems Laboratory, Undergraduate Computer Science Study Program, FMIPA USU (2005–present)
5. Head of the Diploma III Informatics Engineering Study Program, FMIPA USU (2010–2015)
6. Vice Dean III, Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, USU (2012–2018)

Beyond his academic activities, he has extensive professional experience. He served as Project Manager of TATP in Medan and was involved as a software developer in the development of various information systems, including:

He also served as an academic consultant for the Regional Center for the Development of Non-Formal and Informal Education (BP-PNFI) Regional I Medan.

He has conducted and published dozens of research studies, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence, cryptography, and related areas. In addition, he has been actively involved in various professional and sports organizations, where he has held several positions, including:

He also participated in the PSSI Member Development Program in 2014 and 2015.

History

1952

The history of the USU Library began with the founding of Universitas Sumatera Utara on August 20, 1952. The Faculty of Medicine Library was the first to be established, followed by the Faculty of Law Library in 1954.
