Functions and Tasks
The University Library is responsible for supporting USU’s Tridharma: education and teaching, research, and community service.
The library functions to:
- Supporting education, research, and community service at USU by identifying, selecting, acquiring, cataloguing, processing, and making library materials available, with attention to relevance, currency, balance, and preservation.
- Ensuring that library services are provided effectively and efficiently by utilizing advances in information and communication technology.

- Ensuring that library services are provided effectively and efficiently by leveraging advances in information and communication technology.
- Providing facilities to support acquisition, processing, catalog searching, and library services through an automated system with integrated software.
- Planning, promoting, implementing, and evaluating library activities within the framework of education and teaching, research, and community service at Universitas Sumatera Utara.
- Establishing effective management and organizational structures to achieve the library’s goals and objectives.
- Creating an environment and opportunities that enable library staff to achieve and maintain high performance according to established quality standards.
- Providing adequate physical facilities to meet the needs of collections, users, and staff.
- Maintaining effective two-way communication both internally and externally.
- Optimizing resource sharing and networking at the local, regional, national, and international levels.
- Evaluating the implementation and progress of the library’s strategic plan
