The second position (runner-up) was won by the karate contingent of the Indonesian Karate-do Institute of North Sumatra (Inkai Sumut) by winning 4 gold medals, 4 silver, and 7 bronze medals. Meanwhile, the third position was occupied by the Shindoka Sumut karate school by won 4 gold medals, 4 silver, and 6 bronze medals.
Meanwhile, the winners of the Best of The Best (BoB) title were also dominated by athletes representing USU. Of the 4 names of athletes who won BoB, three of them are from USU and one is from the KKI Medan school. They are Rizky Lawyer (USU) male junior BoB kumite, Arnella Putri (USU) female junior BoB kumite, Daniel Hutapea (KKI Medan) male senior BoB kumite, and Tifani Zuhrina (USU) from female senior BoB kumite.
Representing USU Chancellor Prof. Dr. Runtung Sitepu, SH, M Hum, Vice Chancellor IV Prof. Dr. Bustami Syam, M.S.M.E, in his advice at the closing of the 2019 USUIOKC event, expressed his pride in all the karateka who participated in the event. He also appreciated the achievements of the athletes at this year’s event as well as the presence of contingents from abroad.
He expressed his pride in all the athletes for all that had been done and the results obtained during the three-day event. “You work very hard, train very hard, bleed in the dojo, but manage to achieve extraordinary achievements. Applause for all athletes,” he said, which was greeted with loud applause from the audience, Sunday (24/2) night.
Furthermore, Prof. Bustami also expressed his pride in the sportsmanship that was upheld by the athletes who participated in the event. Prof. Bustami also expressed his gratitude for the work of the committee, as well as all parties who supported the implementation of the international event.
“That is what any sport wants, especially karate, the spirit of bushido and extraordinary sports spirit,” he added.
Next year, he continued, USU plans to hold another international karate event which will also invite more foreign karate athletes to enliven the USU International Open Karate Championship event. He targets 10 countries to participate in the event.
Previously, as many as 672 karate athletes from 95 contingents from three countries in Asia participated in the University of Sumatra Utara (USU) International Open Karate Championship (USUIOKC) 2019 which was held from 22-24 February 2019 at the USU Student Arena and Pardede Hall Medan. The hundreds of karateka came from several Forki (Indonesian Karate-Do Sports Federation) administrators in Indonesia, consisting of university administrators, clubs and teams.
